The Calhoun Six to Watch: Western vs. Tustin

September 30th, 2008, 6:06 pm · 2 Comments · posted by Damian Calhoun, OCVarsity.com since 2004

No. 17 Western (2-1) vs. No. 22 Tustin (1-3)

Friday, 7 p.m., at Western High

Preview: The Tillers grabbed their first victory in a big way last week, trouncing Centennial of Compton, 69-28.

Anthony Wilkerson looked healthy from his injury. He rushed for 202 yards.

Tustin also had Ameer Webb chipping in with 150 yards. That is a pretty dangerous 1-2 combination.

Western had its troubles with one rusher in its loss to Fullerton. Michael Allain rushed for 171 yards, while Western had trouble establishing its own ground game.

Aside from a 73-yard run from Quincey Kizze, the Pioneers were pretty much held in check.

Which team will be able to establish their running game? Will it be Tustin (Wilkerson-Webb)? or will the Pioneers (Kizze, Cooksie, Ortega) respond after a tough loss?

"Anthony Wilkerson looked healthy from his ankle injury."

He should since it was a knee injury (sprain MCL) that had been hampering him.

Like Western , Tustin also has a triple threat rushing attack that not only includes Wilkerson & Webb. But also features Taylor Richardson at QB. Last year he was All-League as an Running Back . If Richardson isn't pitching it, he's running it.

I predict a low scoring game with Tustin winning. Tustin's run defense has been pretty solid this year holding every team they've played to under 100 yards rushing (Kennedy 58 , Foothill 92, Orange Lutheran 27). I can't say the same for their passing defense. But since Western is a run dominate offense. It shouldn't be a problem.

ha. This game is going to be no problem for Western to take it dominating just like last year. or the bruises might be even worse for tustin this year ;]
