OC Varsity ~ High school sports talk by the staff of the Orange County Register

Servite still No. 1 in county football in my book

September 29th, 2008, 8:42 am · 6 Comments · posted by DAN ALBANO, ocvarsity.com

Here's how I voted in this week's media poll (with comments):

1. Servite - 3-1, arguably toughest schedule in county and a one-point loss
2. Mission Viejo - Only beat one team with a winning record
3. Mater Dei - Defense still an issue - allowing 32.2
4. LosAl - A perplexing team right now
5. Tesoro - Might be too low
6. Edison - I like the Chargers to beat Monarchs
7. La Habra - Griffins should be very worried about these guys
8. Orange Lutheran - Nice rally vs. North
9. Newport Harbor - Nice bounce-back vs. CdM
10. Esperanza - Aztecs hanging on but San Clemente on their heels

    Dan Albano,
your Top ten has some merit. But I would have to disagree with you on choosing La Habra at number #7 you see before...... La Habra can be considered they must either beat Los Alamitos or San Clemente. This week will show us what teams are made of, because..... we will see some pretty good games comeFriday night.

  • The Highlanders proved a lot to me by beating South Hills, 22-13. With the way LosAl is playing, don't be surprised if LH beats the Grifs on Friday night.

  • Deefend says:

I just dont think that will happen! Los Alamitos is a different caliber of a team then the Highlanders. But yes! I will be surprised if LH beats Los Alamitos. Remember ......Dan Albano to be in the Top Ten you must beat a Top Ten Team.

Dan, my esteemed colleague ... if you think Edison will beat Mater Dei, then you must think Edison is the better team. So, why not rank the better team higher?

At the moment, I am picking Mater Dei, but would not be shocked by an Edison victory.

  • Dan Albano says:

Steve -- my votes also factor what has been earned. Mater Dei earned my No. 4 spot with a pretty good victory against Carson and scoring some serious points against arguably the best team in SoCal - Centennial. That said, I think Mater Dei's time at No. 4 will end with a loss to Edison.

  • Deefend says:

Edison is a good team, and they will compete with Mater Dei, there is no question about it. I just don't think Edison has enough fire power to pull out a victory against the Monarchs.
