COSTA MESA – Sam Wilson carried Marina to a 21-14 victory over Huntington Beach in nonleague action Thursday night at Orange Coast College.
The senior finished with 230 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 39 attempts. But it was a late stop by the Vikings defense that secured Marina’s first victory and earned back the Huntington Beach Surf City trophy.
Trailing, 21-14, Huntington Beach (1-2) drove to the Vikings’ 4 with less than four minutes to play. The Oilers handed off to Kendall Ivey on fourth-and-short. Ivey was wrapped up in the backfield by Cullen Hutchinson.
Marina (1-2) took over and ran the clock out.
“The defense has done it before, and they did it again,” Wilson said. “They did a great job.”
Marina went ahead, 21-0, on Wilson’s third touchdown run with 7:08 to play in the third quarter.
The Oilers came back on a 78-yard TD pass from Sean Guite to Derrick Romo to make it 21-7. They pulled to 21-14 on Ivey’s 1-yard run to end the third.
“We knew the game wasn’t over,” Wilson said.
