FULLERTON -- The Troy football team needed a confidence builder heading into its nonleague game against Bellflower on Thursday at Fullerton High School.
The Warriors got the boost they needed with a 38-3 victory over the Buccaneers.
The victory is the first of the season for Troy (1-2).
Senior running back Chaz Wendt rushed for 220 yards and three touchdowns on 18 carries to lead the Warriors ground attack, which amassed 327 yards.
Troy scored on its first two possessions, the first coming on a 2-yard scoring run from DeAngelo Bonner, set up by a 63-yard return from Wendt on the opening kickoff.
On Troy’s next possession, Wendt’s 23-yard scoring run put the Warriors ahead, 14-0.
Troy held the Buccaneers (0-4) scoreless in the second half and pulled away with three fourth-quarter touchdowns.
Bonner was injured and laid motionless near the 50-yard line at the Troy sideline for about five minutes after a hard tackle near the end of the first half.
The junior got up and spent the rest of the half on the bench. He was then taken from the field by stretcher during halftime, acknowledging applause with a thumbs-up sign.
After the game, Troy coach Jim Burton said Bonner was unconscious for about four minutes after the tackle.
