WHITTIER -- Pacifica’s football team saved its best for the fourth quarter Thursday night.
The Mariners made their game against host California exciting, but they fell short, 34-27, in a matchup of CIF-SS-ranked teams.
Pacifica, ranked sixth in the Southwest Division, trailed, 27-6, after three quarters. Behind quarterback Raymond Huizar, the Mariners (1-2) then erupted for 21 points in the final 12 minutes.
California (3-0) led, 17-6, at halftime and added 10 points in the third.
“First of all, they are a good football team,” Pacifica coach Guy Gardner said of California, ranked fourth in the Southeast Division.
“But you can’t perform the way we did in the first half — which seems to be a theme for us — and make it comfortable for ourselves.”
In the third quarter, California capitalized on a muff by Pacifica on a punt return to take a 27-6 lead on a 12-yard touchdown run by quarterback Greg Perea.
But in the fourth quarter, Huizar tossed a 3-yard touchdown pass to Seth Trader and a 14-yard scoring pass and conversion to Clay Leonard to cut California’s lead to 27-20 with 3:13 left.
But on California’s next play, Perea responded with a 60-yard touchdown run to put Pacifica down by two touchdowns again.
Pacifica beat themselves our team needs to come out reaDy to plan fired up !!it takes whole team to win.
Pacifica cant be a one man show ,, cant show up to play in the 4th quarter..and win, well we almost did, , . team get ready to play,,, !!!!!!!!!!
i was at the calhi-pacifica game-hats off to both teams for an exciting game-pacifica doesnt quit-very good effort in the fourth quarter. the special teams really cost Pacifica with a blocked punt and extra point. Calhi uses a solid running game with a very smart QB and has a solid defense but Pacifica put quite a scare into them with a strong 4th quarter effort- good luck to Pacifica the rest of the way.
the hogs down in front need to step up their game for pacifica
they are young, but they are good
they need to get it together for 4 quarters
i have faith that this will happen, then raymond huizar will have plenty of time to make his reads down the field
have faith folks, that is why we have a PRE-SEASON
Bravo Mr PHS........ Well said. Give Raymond the chance to read and he will pick apart the defense.
