SANTA ANA — It wasn’t without a hiccup, but Century earned its first victory of the season.
The Centurions overcame double-digit penalties and a sloppy first half before finding a rhythm in the second half to beat Godinez, 26-14, in a nonleague game at Segerstrom High on Thursday.
Tony Santana connected with Johnny Sok for a 32-yard touchdown with 3:07left in the third quarter on his only pass of the game to take a 12-7 lead, a turning point in the game.
“I told coach we had to pass and when we finally did I just caught the ball and ran,” Sok said. “It pumped us up. We were really out of focus (in the first half).”
Century (1-2) settled in and took advantage of two Godinez second-half interceptions and a lost fumble.
Abraham Palacios and Juan Carlos Sanchez each added rushing touchdowns in the fourth quarter to pad the lead and go up 26-7.
Santiago Fuentes had two rushing touchdowns for the Grizzlies. He barreled in from 5 yards out to give Godinez its first ever lead, 7-0. The second— 1 yard, up the middle — came with 1:17 left in the game.
Godinez (0-4) dominated time of possession in the first half but squandered two scoring chances.
