For the second time this year, Cypress broke 200, shooting a 191 against Los Alamitos at Lakewood Golf Course, one of the reasons why the Centurions jumped three places in this week’s poll, moving from fifth up to second.
Earlier in the week, the Centurions posted a convincing seven-stroke victory against Palm Desert at Los Serranos during the Ayala Fall Classic girls golf tournament.
Nicole Rivera carded a 3-over 77 to lead Cypress that day. Kendall Dusenberry (Hart) and Lauren Mata (Palm Desert) both tied for first with an even-par 74.
Kristina Nhim (78), Amelia Ek (81) and Sally Kim (82) also placed inside the top 25 in the 115-player “A” flight field at the tournament.
The Centurions, who have not posted a score worse than 204 this season, will face Kennedy on Tuesday at Lakewood Golf Course
TOUGH TO TOPIt is going to be hard for Doug Crosby to top what happened to him last week.
First, the Rosary girls golf coach watched his Royals post a 212 during their victory against Western on Wednesday at Dad Miller, which was the lowest over-par round that one of his teams have posted during his six years at the school.
And then, while the Royals defeated Downey, 224-250, the following day at Rio Hondo Golf Club, he got a hole-in-one of the par-three No. 7.
That round was a special one for the Lloyd Hoehle, too. The Royals’ No. 1 player shot a three-over 39, to become the medalist for the third time in as many days.
She carded a 42 against Western at Western Hill and a 37 in the historic round at Dad Miller.
STRONG RESULT
Led by Desiree Dubrouil’s 5-over 79 at Los Serranos, No. 3 Mater Dei finished in a three-way tie for seventh with Great Oka and Murrieta Valley at the Ayala Fall Classic last week with an overall score of 444.
Victoria Nguyen also placed in the top 25 in the 115-player “A” Flight field at the tournament.
The Monarchs will open their Trinity League season on Tuesday at Willowick Golf Course, facing unranked Rosary, which has been posting some surprisingly good scores this season. The Monarchs bring a 213 scoring average into Tuesday’s match against their league rival.
NO CHANGE AT THE TOP
For the third consecutive week, Santa Margarita tops the girls golf poll, bringing a 4-0 record into Tuesday’s match with St. Margaret’s. The Eagles defeated the Tartans last week at Marbella Country Club, 201-237. Tuesday’s match will be played at Tijeras Creek Golf Club.
So far, the Eagles have not posted a score worse than 206. But Santa Margarita coach Amy Connelly isn’t surprised one bit.
This year’s roster is one of the most experienced that the Eagles have had, saying in a recent e-mail that the “team is blessed with talented golfers who consistently display outstanding leadership, character and maturity.”
Kelsey Hummer has twice been a medalist for the Eagles this year, carding a 3-over 39 against Trabuco Hills at Dove Canyon Country Club and an even-par 36 against El Dorado last Thursday at Black Gold Golf Course.
“I have been proud of the girls and how well they have played this year. The girls are working and improving as we go along,” Connelly said after defeating the Tritons at Marbella. “This is right where I thought our girls would be.”
