ORANGE — Canyon’s defense held Bonita of La Verne in check long enough for tailback Jared Gobert to turn in a pair of game-breaking runs in a nonleague contest Thursday at El Modena High.
Gobert had a 91-yard kickoff return for a touchdown in the third quarter, followed by a fourth-quarter 70-yard scoring run from scrimmage as the Comanches came away with a 17-3 victory over the Bearcats.
Gobert led all rushers with 159 yards on 10 carries.
The Bearcats averaged 35.5 points per game in two previous victories before being held to a third quarter field goal by the Comanches (2-1).
Canyon never allowed more than 8 yards on any single running play.
After Evan Highley’s 32-yard field goal tied the score for the Bearcats (2-1), Gobert received the ensuing kickoff, broke through small hole, and then weaved through traffic before finding a clear path to the end zone.
