HUNTINGTON BEACH -- Westminster appeared to need the halftime of their nonleague game against visiting Marina to regroup.
The Lions were the victim of several big plays and trailed by a pair of touchdowns at the intermission.
“They made all the plays in the first half,” Westminster coach Ted McMillen said of Marina.
The Lions (1-1) provided the big plays in the second half as they rallied to a 35-28 victory at Ocean View High over the Vikings (0-2).
Quarterback Kenny Chapple scored the winning touchdown on a 12-yard run with 9:09 to go in the fourth quarter.
Marina defeated Westminster, 14-13, last year.
“We told them to play with emotion,” McMillen said of his halftime discussion. “We came out and made plays in the second half.”
The defense came out in the second half and provided a much-needed spark for the Lions. M.J. Morales got things rolling with a 75-interception return for a touchdown early in the second quarter.
Westminster finally tied the score on a 1-yard run by Louie Villa as time ran out in the third quarter.
Saul Santana added a 70-yard interception return with 7:32 remaining in the game. The Lions also scored on a 99-yard kickoff return by Aaron Garbutt in the first quarter.
“The defense scored two touchdowns, a kickoff return … it was a great team effort,” McMillen said.
Dear Damian Calhoun,
Da ya think just maybe you can give some ink to the boys from Marina H.S. Varsiity football team? They out played Westnimster on offense and on defense except for two missed guiuded passes Marina did a great job in passing and running all over the Lions. Do you realize that most of the seniors played both ways and starting juniors with little or no varsity experience played there hearts out so you got one side of the story from the winnig coach that received a couple of gifts in winning this one. How about Zach Couey and Jared Balis, connecting for long yardage and Jarrid running back a kidkoff 65 yards Sam Wilson playing both ways the whole game runnig for 84 yards, and running for a 10 yard TD. making key tackles on defense and making a fumble recovery. How about Conner king,, Cullen Hutchinson, Robert Quick,Tyler Steen, Colton Toles,J. Rodriguez, Adam Clark, making a record amount of tackles. What about Kobi Gajardo and Chris Hoffman, Drew Jordan making key receptions.
Drew Jordan knocking down a pass in the endzone. others on defense line stopping the LIons running andthe secondary stopping many attempted big plays in the air. I'm not sure if you were really at the game maybe you called the coach to get details. Look, could you in the future have a more balanced approach to reporting the games I pay for good reporting when I purchase a newspaper and give some credit to the other team, this was not a blowout by any means. I realize that you don't have a lot of room but pick one or two players on the team that only made 4 TD's instead of 5TD's from a very close game this is not acceptable.
Thanks.
GP Mark
Hey grandpa Mark,
Maybe you have old eyes, but Westminster outplayed Marina on offense and defense big time in the second half, 28-7. Westminster created those opportunities by shutting down Marina's running game and then with pressure on the QB in passing situations. Marina could not handle the blitz and when Westminster started to do that, it was game over. The QB started rushing his throws and threw two picks. That's why they won, not because of any gifts. Secondary stopping big plays? I saw Westminster drop three TD passes that were beautiful throws right into guys hands. I think Mr. Calhoun's article was right on the spot.
Don't get me wrong, Marina played tough, but they didn't deserve to win. You sound just like the whiners I saw at the game. Grown men yelling at highschool kids in the stands. This post by you is generally indicative of the general lack of class displayed by the Marina parents and boosters. Coach Petrone is a good guy, wish he could put a handle on his parents. They are not acceptable.
Excuses are like A-holes. Everybody has one.
Hey grandpa mark
why aren't you giving any credit to westminster... half the guys on "Marina H.S. Varsiity football team'' live in westminster bounandries... send your son, grandson, nephew or anyone of your spoiled kids to westminster or the "GETTO" and IF and only IF they make the team they might be able to get some "ink"... and for the game the lions stepped up at half and marina couldn't keep up....
