COSTA MESA -- Calvary Chapel (2-1) earned its second victory of the season with a 28-12 triumph over La Quinta (0-2) in nonleague play Thursday night at Orange Coast College.
Each team returned a kickoff for a touchdown. La Quinta’s Tyler Andreen went 89 yards midway through the second quarter to cut the Aztecs’ deficit to 14-6.
The Eagles’ Brandon Perez countered with an 86-yard touchdown on the opening kick of the second half to make it 21-6.
Perez, a sophomore, had 124 yards on 26 carries. He also intercepted a pass and just missed another.
Nathan Do’s 7-yard touchdown reception brought the Aztecs to 21-12 with 7:35 left in the third quarter.
However, Perez’s 14-yard scoring run pushed Calvary Chapel’s lead back to 28-12 with 2:34 to play.
The Eagles went ahead 14-0 in the first half on touchdown passes of 9 and 19 yards by Daniel Fierro.
