The Foothill boys and girls cross country teams are expected to be two of the better distance programs in CIF-SS Division III this season, and judging by the initial results of the season, they appear ready to live up to those lofty expectations.
Sophomore Nathaniel Cushing-Murray won the boys sophomore race, while junior Sierra Vega posted the fastest individual time of the meet to win the girls junior race, as each led their squads to team victories at the 2008 Don Bosco Tech Invitational Saturday at Santa Fe Dam Regional Park in Irwindale.
Cushing-Murray, who finished third in the Sea View League finals last season, won his race in a time of 15:33. Senior Patrick Douglas (15:34.7) placed eigth in the senior race, while the Knights also received stellar efforts from juniors Alex Campana (15:37), Barron Maizland (15:56), and Austin Morgan (16:13), who all finished in the top ten in the junior race.
The team's overall time of 1:18.54 was the best of all teams in the competition.
Vega, who transferred from Chapparal High in Temecula, won the junior girls race in a time of 18:02.5, with teammate Carley Gross (19:06.6) finishing second. Fellow juniors Allie Rigby (19:43.2), Shelby Stegall (19:45.7), and Riley Mach (19:57.9) all finished in the top 12, as the Knights (1:36:23) finished second in overall team time to Redlands High.
Both the boys (ranked third in county and second in CIF-SS Division III) and the girls (ranked fourth in the county and first in CIF-SS Division III) will be in action Saturday night in the sweepstakes race at the Woodbridge Invitational.
