Brian Murrieta connected on an 87-yard touchdown with Nic Calhoun on his first pass attempt, then found Steven Gutierrez late in the second quarter to wake up Segerstrom’s offense in a 42-0 shutout against Century in a nonleague game on Friday at Segerstrom High.
After the Jaguars lost two fumbles on running plays on their first four plays of the game, Murrieta rolled to his right and found a wide-open Calhoun on the run for a 7-0 first quarter lead. A 27-yard pass to Matt Navarro two series later set up the 7-yard touchdown pass to Gutierrez with 7.3 seconds left the first half.
“We needed something to get us going,” Segerstrom coach Mike Maceranka said. “Century took us out of our rhythm early but Calhoun is a big weapon and that (touchdown) play helped us take off.”
Aaron Amrine’s 19-yard scamper made it 21-0 in the third quarter and Murrieta (1 yard), and Gary Ferman (19 yards) each adding rushing touchdowns in the second half.
Segerstrom’s defense held the Centurions to 156 yards of total offense
