WESTERN (0-0) VS. CANYON (1-0)

Site, time: El Modena High, Friday 7 p.m.

Outlook: This should be a fun game. Both will score a lot this year. Western has one of the top juniors in the county, running back/linebacker Ruben Ortega who likes the physical action whether he is carrying the ball or going after a ball-carrier. Western should have all kinds of speed at other positions, too, as usual. Canyon opened last week with a 42-21 victory over Fullerton, as Tubotein Taylor rushed for 119 yards and two touchdowns. The Comanches made big plays on defense, with three interceptions including one by Colton Grandbouche that was returned for a touchdown. Our top 25 rankings have Canyon at No. 15 and Western at No. 18. I always hate picking against Western and I think Ortega is spectacular, but I’m not second-guessing my own rankings.
