This is a new weekly award that I’m starting (I’m still working on the name). Each week, I will select one player from the county who turned the football field into his own playground. With Week 0 nearing completion, I found a player who kicked off his season in grand fashion:
Cain Flores, Senior, Buena Park, Running back/Defensive back
Flores, given the nickname “Hurricain”, scored three rushing touchdowns and added a 99-yard interception return for a score in Buena Park’s 40-0 victory over Bassett on Friday.
Flores scored on runs of 40, 16 and 1 yard. He finished with 138 rushing yards and helped the Coyotes end a 17-game losing streak.
How did he celebrate his performance? He had to go to practice Saturday.
What are your thoughts on your performance?
CF: “It was pretty good, but I could have done better.”
In what way?
CF: “I fumbled twice.”
Talk about your touchdowns.
CF: “On the 16-yard run: I saw the hole and I shot for it.
On the 40-yard run: I just used my speed.
On the 99-yard return: The ball was tipped, I came up for it and started running.”
How did you prepare for your senior season?
CF: “I had a talk with Coach (Rob) Ryan, and he told me what he expected out of me for this season. I took it heart. During the spring, I ran on my own and I worked out after practice.”
How are things different this year for the Coyotes?
CF: “We’re more of a family this year. We’re working harder. We had talent last year, but we didn’t have the conditioning and we would get killed in the second half. Now we’re better conditioned and functioning together.”
Flores is off and running. He is already closing in on the 259 yards he rushed for last season, and he has eclipsed the one touchdown he scored last season.
He is destined not to be a one-hit wonder like this Hurricane.
Agree or Disagree? Love it or hate it? Speak your mind here or at dcalhoun@ocregister.com
Check back Monday for the defensive star of Week 0.

I think this is a great idea it helps build cinfidence in the outstandinh players making them want to do better and it helps other players work harder so that they can be recognized. I am particularly found of this article cuz Hurricain is my lil brother. I’ve watched him vcome so far in his football carreer from riding the bench to rocking the game playing both ways. I am so proud of him all his hard work is paying off, and never once did he give up or want to give up. I’ve been to every game and he hasn’t let me down yet.
Im one of the Hurricain’s biggest fans.
That’s MY brother!!!!!
Part of your brother’s success comes from having a supportive brother like you!
I’m also one of Hurricain’s biggest fans! He is something else to see. His speed and energy are to be envied. Something passed on from his Mom. I’m Cain’s Godmother ans Aunt. We’re all very proud of him and know he’ll be something BIG!!!!
