WEEK 4 – OCT. 2

TESORO VS. EL DORADO
AT VALENCIA HIGH

This is a dream matchup. Well, it’s one sportswriter’s dream anyway, a dream in which a top north-county, mid-division team plays a top south-county, upper-division team. The only way to find out how accurate the top 25 is, and how right or wrong our interested readership is, is to have such teams play against each other. So bless Tesoro coach Brian Barnes and El Dorado coach Jeff Bailey for putting this one together. Tesoro was the surprise team of 2007. The Titans in 2006 were 1-9 overall and 0-5 in the South Coast, but in ‘07 they went 7-4 overall and 5-0 in league, including a victory over Mission Viejo in league play. The Titans should be good this year, too. They bring back all-league quarterback Robbie Picazo and all-league receiver Preston King, and on defense they have linebacker John Michael Davis, a transfer from Santa Margarita who committed to Boise State. El Dorado has won back-to-back CIF-SS championships, and should be very good this year, too. 2007 Century League MVP Kane Wilson returns, as does all-league linebacker Billy Henley. The Golden Hawks have a lot of graduated linemen to replace, including last year’s county defensive player of the year Anthony Laurenzi. El Dorado has the sort of momentum going that keeps a program on top for a long time.
