OC Varsity ~ High school sports talk by the staff of the Orange County Register

Top 25 countdown: No. 2

2. Orange Lutheran (10-2) – The Lancers are not as big as the past couple of teams at Lutheran, but there is plenty of speed and skill all over the field.

Bobby Wheatley takes over at quarterback. He saw some action in the playoffs -- and fared well -- last year when Blake Hyepock was injured.

The addition of Gabe Lemon, a transfer from Trabuco Hills, helps the defensive backfield and the receiving corps. Lemon was an All-County first-team defensive back in 2007.

Exavier Edwards showed flashes of excellence at tailback as a sophomore last year when he rushed for 476 yards and averaged 7 yards a carry.

Scotty Williams had 18 receptions for 192 yards.

The defense still has a Pemasa: senior linebacker Jeremiah Pemasa, who had 70 tackles and four sacks in '07.

Matt Barkely is definately the best in the country. Now as for the rest of his team, thats unknown...The past few years Mter Dei has had the offensive line experience, unfortanely the team has not advance past 1st round...somehow the kids look like they are tired towards the end of the season...Therefore, I Believe the team to beat is OLU. ..Lutheran has the best coaching staff in the state, if not the country. The past years Lutheran has been stellar...I believe they are the team to beat in the OC, thus they should be number1...

I agree with "polyalum"! Especially with how they've played Long Beach Poly the last 2 years! You need to beat OLu to establish yourself as the number 1 team in Orange County.

Well as I wrote before, Olu should be number 1 in the OC... I attended the Carson vs Mater Dei game on Wed and I left the game asking my self, how does anyone see Mater Dei being number 1? Mater Dei did not display a running game. 2) the defensive front was slow and had no penetration at the line of scrimmage. 3) the defensive backfield was very weak in coverage for the exception of Maldanado ( great athlete! )...The bottom line is that Mater Dei is overrated and should be fortunate to come out victorious, thanks to Mr Barkely....

If you have to beat OLu to establish yourself in the county, I guess Servite should be #1 since they keep beating up on the Lancers every year.
