Top 25 countdown: No. 9

August 25th, 2008, 12:02 am · · posted by

Tesoro
9. Tesoro (7-4) – The Titans went 5-0 in 2007 in the South Coast League, including a victory over Mission Viejo, to win the league championship.

It was a quick exit in the playoffs, a first-round loss to Mater Dei in the Pac-5 Division, but Tesoro still was the big surprise of the season. The Titans should be contending for the league title against this year. They bring back all-league quarterback Robbie Picazo, who was 114 for 220, for 1,768 yards and 17 touchdowns. All-league receiver Preston King had 33 catches for 549 yards. Running back Adam Albitar, left, rushed for 363 yards, and should get the ball more with the graduation of running back and ’07 league player of the year Harold Williams. On defense, the Titans have all-league returnee Scott Graves (77 tackles) and John Michael Davis, who transferred from Santa Margarita where he was the Eagles’ third-leading tackler in ’07.

I think Matt Barkley and Mater Dei need to win some big games this year to fulfill all the hype.

So Joe, any comments on Tesoro??

  • STEVE FRYER, ocvarsity.com says:

I agree. Michael Phelps was on the cover of Sports Illustrated before the Olympics. And that got me to thinking, “Good lord! He needs to win some medals to fulfill all the hype!”

  • John Smith says:

I think St. Margaret’s needs to be in the Top 25. I mean, please, La Habra, Costa Mesa ?????

  • ST. Margaret’s would beat any of the Top 25 that Fryer has made up. Servite, by the way, is not a good program.

  • James says:

I am really excited to see how Tesoro uses junior QB Brett Mason. He is a great talent and started at Santa Margarita as a sophmore. I know Picazzo is solid, but doesn’t Mason deserve to take some snaps.

  • xxaapp says:

Tesoro returns with a lot of strong players and if that isn’t enough, they acquired a few more. Their coaches have proven that they know their stuff and can lead their team to victory. This year they will need to prove that they weren’t a one season wonder, that they didn’t win purely because other teams underestimated them. If their schedule wasn’t so soft I’d say that they were under rated.

They have 2 games that they need to be ready for San Clemente and Mission. If they underestimate San Clemente they will be dealt a loss. And, two teams will define their season and the SCL on the opening night of league play on October 17th. Tesoro vs Mission at Tesoro. Tesoro will be looking to prove that last year was not a fluke. Mission will have one thing on their minds “Revenge”.

This is all pre-season talk, let the games begin!

    Rocco:

What an honor to have you here, someone who took on Tiger Woods and almost beat the greatest golfer ever.

I have seen USC coach Pete Carroll at plenty of Servite practices over the past few years. I think he goes there to recruit football players. If not, then he is just stocking up on Credo shirts and visors.

  • gung ho says:

Mason should have never started at santa margarita and he is 3rd string quarterback at tesoro at best.. He should be a lineman
