OC Varsity ~ High school sports talk by the staff of the Orange County Register

Mission Viejo almost got another aquatics star

July 22nd, 2008, 11:37 pm · 2 Comments · posted by DAN ALBANO, ocvarsity.com

One of the hottest prospects in diving is 15-year-old Kelly Markle of Laguna Niguel. Markle is competing in her first senior nationals this week in Pasadena but here’s the catch: the freshman-to-be is moving away from Orange County.

Markle, who trains with Crown Valley Divers and has attended St. Margaret’s as a pre-high schooler, is set to take off early next month for national powerhouse club The Woodlands in Texas.

Markle said if she wasn’t moving, Mission Viejo would have been her pick for high school. That’s right, the home of the two-time CIF-SS Division I champion Lady Diablos. Mission Viejo already has Crown Valley standout Haley McNamara and with Markle on board, that might have meant some serious points at CIF.

I’m sure the Division I teams chasing Mission Viejo (Edison, Fountain Valley to name two) will not shed any tears from this report.

How can someone living in Laguna Niguel attend Mission? The city of Laguna Niguel is within the CUSD boundaries and she would have attended either Dana or Aliso Niguel.

Or do Mission’s boundaries extend from Irvine to Oceanside?

    Dan,
You can’t win a triple sudden death water polo game by two points. If it is sudden death, then it must be tied, and the next goal will win! The winning team will win by one point, not two. Nice prediction, though. D-1 will be a s tough as ever with 9, maybe ten teams all capable of winning the finals. Good luck to all teams in the upcoming season!
