Regarding the OC selections, I find it peculiar the Lally went before Maurer, Gates, Drummond and Hendricks. I found all 4 to be significantly better.
Shane Boras drafted, are you kidding. Average skills with below average size. He wouldn’t make our varsity starting eight. Must be a bargaining tool for the Cards.
I am astounded that tyler rahmatulla and nick ramirez were not drafted, yet, someone like aaron gates, who couldnt hit the only good pitching he faced this year in mater dei’s starters aaron northcraft and ian mccarthy and j serras joe kurash gets drafted.
Are you kiddin aperson? Just because Gates has a couple off days (like everyone else) doesn’t mean he shouldn’t be drafted. In my opinion he should’ve been drafted higher than Mauer. I do agree that Ramirez and rahmatulla should have been drafted, but Gates and Maurer are still probably going to Pepperdine and Long Beach. So I don’t think it really matters.
There are so many great ball players here in Southern California… Kids train and play all year. There are many great little/pony leagues, high schools/coaches, travel teams, JC’s and Colleges, all working to make Southern California the Dominican Republic of baseball here in America. Every year it looks like 10% to 20% of the kids drafted come from So Cal. These draft numbers are completely disproportionate to the population numbers.
Drafting is combination of current/projected ability, stats, height, weight, bat, throw, speed, family lineage, team needs, family economics, team economics, coachability/likeability, player grades, scholarship/school money provided to player etc, etc, etc, . Parents and advisors of perspective or draft able players send out dollar figure they are looking for to scouts and teams. Like everything else in life it is a combination of issues that get a particular drafted high, low, or not at all. In the long run if a players loves the game, works, has talent, and ultimately PERFORMS most will get an opportunity to continue to play ball and move up. Baseball is a buisness and team always want to draft the best players in order to make a profit.
mauer is not going to long beach. his brother told me that seattle would have drafted him in the 7th round but mauer agreed to be taken lower for more money so he is going to sign for sure.
gates is going to be a pitcher not a hitter so it doesnt matter that he couldnt hit of good pitchers.
Rahmatulla was called in the 3rd round he gave them what it would take to sign and they said it was too high. Tyler will excel at UCLA and his stock will go up. Lally had a good summer and was injured most of the spring, MLB wants leftys that can throw upper 80′s with a good crurve. Boras was a good move for the Cards. It could’nt hurt them of course it was a favor so was Shane playing at SC. He will not see any significant playing time. Kreuter did scott a favor.
first of all…aaron gates is one of the best overall players this county has ever seen. he can hit.. throw 94 from the mound with 2 great offspeed pitches….shows how much aperson knows
yes i’d have to agree with afanofcard….i saw aaron play scoutball anmd he would hit seeds off of any pitcher who threw 90+. he can turn on any pitch as well as hit pee’s to left field…and as far as aaron on the mound….expect to see him pitching in the bigs someday…the throws 90-94 from the left side with and unbeliably decieving arm angle with the best LH curve and a great changeup…..APERSON is obviously a mater dei fan who is an o lu hater b/c olu killed them in the season….plz respond to my comment
