SOFTBALL
CIF-SS Playoffs
Division II, second round
Ayala (20-10-1) of Chino Hills at No. 4 Mission Viejo (23-6-1)
Outlook: With victories over Kennedy, Santiago of Corona and Vista Murrieta, the Bulldogs are capable of going the distance and taking the title. Ayala’s Nani St. Germain (.404, 9 HR, 29 RBIs) is a big-time power hitter and sophomore pitcher Jessica Hall (20-10, 0.94 ERA, 222 K) has proven herself in big-game situations. The Diablos have two star pitchers in Pacific-bound Michelle Tait (12-3, 0.77 ERA, 149 K) and Georgetown-bound MacKensey Carter (11-3, 0.34 ERA, 125 K). — Carlos Arias

BOYS TENNIS
CIF-SS Playoffs
Division V, semifinals
Thacher (Condor 2, 10-3) vs. Segerstrom (Golden West 1, 18-2), Segerstrom High, 3 p.m.
Outlook: The Jaguars are the third seed and in only their second season of varsity competition make their second consecutive semifinals appearance. Segerstrom last season was ousted by Thacher, located in the tennis community of Ojai. The Jaguars are led in singles by Bruce Le and the No. 1 doubles team of Alex Dessoliers and Dylan Dongird, the back-to-back Golden West League doubles champions. The Jaguars’ doubles team has led the way all season, having won every set since the start of league and through the playoffs have compiled a 115-2 record. Despite finishing second in the Condor League, Thacher is the second seed. Cate of Carpinteria, the top seed, finished ahead of Thacher in league and plays La Salle of Pasadena in the other semifinal. — Miguel A. Melendez
