Games of the day: May 13

May 13th, 2008, 1:26 am · 1 Comment · posted by OCVarsity Editor

It’s playoff time. Don’t miss any of the big contests, and there are plenty of them today.

SWIMMING
CIF-SS Masters

At Belmont Plaza, Long Beach, noon (diving), 5 p.m. (swimming)
Outlook: Thank goodness for depth. How else could a meet lose some 50 individual swims to scratches, including a pair from Edison’s Tom Shields, and still be interesting? The Masters can because it still boasts Hale-Krug II, outstanding relays and Bates-Danny in the breaststroke. And if that is not enough, Cindy Tran will be in the A final for the girls 50. We get to see her race Cynthia Fascella, Bates and more. Don’t forget Jahanshahi and Rimkus, too. And all the divers seem on board, so get ready to be entertained. – Dan Albano

BASEBALL
CIF-SS Division III playoffs
Garden Grove at Beckman, 3:15 p.m.
Outlook: This is a wild-card round game. Garden Grove finished third in the Garden Grove League. The Argonauts went 9-6 in league, and take a 12-13 overall record into the playoffs. They had lost three league games in a row before sweeping Bolsa Grande last week, the final week of the regular season. Jordan Geiger is batting .418 for the Argos, with 34 RBIs. Tyler Madrid is batting .397 with 26 RBIs for Garden Grove. Beckman finished third in the Pacific Coast League, with a 5-7 league record. The Patriots are 14-11 overall. They won three of their final four regular-season games. — Steve Fryer

BOYS TENNIS
CIF-SS Division I Playoffs
Quarterfinals
Troy at University, 3 p.m.
Outlook: University and Troy are meeting for the first time this season. The Trojans are led by senior Jason Lin John Huang at singles. Senior Jonathan Noguchi will lead the Warriors at No. 1 singles, and junior Justin Thompson will take the No. 2 spot. This match could come down to doubles, but the Warriors are going to need their singles to take some points.  University (21-0) enters the match as the top seed. Troy is 24-3 and won the Freeway League title. — Miguel A. Melendez

CIF-SS Division I Playoffs
Quarterfinals
Dana Hills vs. Mater Dei at Los Caballeros Tennis Club, 3 p.m.
Outlook: This match could come down to games. But that could change depending on how Dana Hills’ Warren Hardie feels. The junior singles player has been battling back problems and though he swept at No. 2 singles in Saturday’s 11-7 second-round victory against Northwood, he could barely walk after the match. Evan Bolles and Taylor Stephan will anchor the doubles teams. Mater Dei has two good singles players in Charlie Alvarado and Chris Freeman, though together they won the The Ojai’s CIF doubles crown in April. Look for the Freeman and Alvarado to play singles. Rickey Baylon and Ryan Agbayani are a strong doubles team for the Monarchs. — Miguel A. Melendez
