It would be nice to see the OC Register cover some of the schools that have made major accomplishments this baseball season, but don’t have the financial clout to draw any time or effort from Steve Fryer or his staff. It is amazing that a school like Orange High, who won it’s first league championship since 1995, only gets a mention in passing in an article about Ocean View H.S., who they had to defeat in two consecutive games to win the league. The smaller schools who have to work harder to put a championship team together, are constantly ignored by the Register staff because they don’t place players in major universities or have parents who can afford to finance a team with all that it needs. The schools like Orange, Santa Ana, Saddleback are constantly ignored because they don’t have the clout of a Mater Dei or Orange Lutheran.
Sports coverage means just that. Cover all the sports for ALL the schools. The attitude projected by your staff should be one of interest in all the schools, not one for the schools who are attractive to Fryer and his staff. Spend some time at the smaller schools. You will find coaches, athletes and parents with an attitude of hard work, morals and sportsmanship that you don’t find at schools that feel like they can pay their way into the playoffs.
