LONG BEACH In back-t0-back heats of the boys 50-yard freestyle, Yucaipa’s Karl Krug (Auburn) and Redlands’ Joey Hale (Arizona State) each touched first in Division I-record times of 20.05 seconds. Click to see the video of Hale’s race:

Krug went first in Heat 3 and Hale equaled the just dripping-wet record in the fourth and final heat. Are you kidding me? Friday’s Division I final is going to be nuts when these two step to the blocks here at Belmont Plaza. I captured video of Hale and will post shortly

On the Orange County beat, Edison’s Tom Shields qualified first in the 200 free in 1:37.27 and looked a little miffed. The surprises of the day so far: Melanie Klaren of Mater Dei qualifying first in the 200 free (county-leading 1:50.78) and Los Al’s Kaley Dodson breaking 24 seconds in the 50.
