Brea Olinda’s Justine Hartman was selected as the California freshman girls basketball player of the year by calhisports.com.

The release to announce her selection said she was picked in a close call over Mater Dei’s Kaleena Lewis and Lynwood’s Sheila Boykin. Foothill’s Christina Marinacci was the choice as the top freshman in the state in 2006.

This is the funniest thing I’ve ever heard - you have some bonehead coaches and parent subscribing to a site that loves to take your money to get your kid put on a list - that by the way means absolutely nothing. Anyone who has watched Brea knows that she’ s only tall - nothing else. This is just like the Plyocity crap where parent put their kids in this game so they feel like they’re really something - most normal thinking people realize that it’s just a money maker - what a bunch of bologne. Hey carlos I’ll give you a $100 and then you can pu my list of fabulous kindergartners in your paper.

You cannot be serious - Ok first of all is this what the media has come to - you must be really struggling for stuff to write about - top of what - top of a list of suckers who pay to get on a list. So now I get it - it’s not whether a player is good anymore it’s about who sells them better and I mean $ !!!

When I read the statement below, I realize how important an education is and that is not a ‘haha.’ Whoever you are, it is obvious you know nothing about female basketball skills. Perhaps, you should take up something not quite so invigorating like fishing or knitting. Capish!

  4. What's wrong with you people Says:

How is it acceptable to trash the accomplishments of a 9th grade girl? These kids are not college or pros, they are not paid to play. Even though they are exposed for their athletic abilities, they are still kids. To sit there and say a kid is only tall and nothing else.. what an idiot. Instead of blasting the girl from Brea, why not just make a case for why someone else was better.
As for the “plyocity crap” that was mentioned.. Yes the guys who put on those games are pretty full of themselves, but at least they’re giving kids a platform to play one another and be seen. No one else is doing it in the county.

  5. maybe Says:

Her teammates ar tired aof watching their coach kiss this kids butt, she’s an awful student by the way to above, rude and a terrible teammate.

  6. naive Says:

Whats wrong with Sink - thats what you should be asking, he posts crap on socalhoops all the time - he forces his agenda about this 1 girl and dissrespects the other players on his team. She’s a terrible teammate, doesn’t practice when she wants to , a terrible student, and just watch how many times she rolls her eyes at the coach and her teammates in a game as she doesn’t want to work hard.

Now to your other point - who goes to see plyocity - just the family of the players who are playing and noone else - get out to some top club games if you want to see the real players playing and how many college coaches are there.

  7. Guve me a break Says:

Blame your coach nucklehead, her teammates can’t stand her and her parents are a piece of work just look at how old they are, no responsibility, and freeloaders. She could be the worst Brea attitude I’ve seen in my many years as a Ladycat follower.

  8. Brea Basketball Mom Says:

Our family personally knows Justine and not only is she a wonderful girl with great character but she is a true basketball talent. For those who want to trash talk Justine because she is only “tall”, you may want to go watch a few games and see that she is a true talented player and is fundamentally ground, a powerful, unstoppable great center who is just on her way getting her high school career started. Let’s see who’s trash talking when she’s on her way to a DIV I team in a couple years….just like when Jeannette Pohlen was trashed….she’s at Stanford playing in the Final Four in her Freshman year…..All these Brea haters should get the facts straight and stop their nonsense trash talking! Justine has earned her title as Freshman Player of the Year…nobody accomplished it for her but herself. We’re proud of you Justine, way to go #40!!!

  9. Thx Mom Says:

Of course you know her Mom, but not as much as her teammates as you’re never around, only when they’re handing out the freebies - oh I forgot you don’t pay a dime or help with anything. You’re the reason this kid is a spoiled brat and by the way she never earned a thing - she got the ball because of her teammates hard work, your daughter is lazy on the court, gets everything handed to her and in the classroom - you might want to touch bases with her teachers sometime - oh I forgot you’re too busy. Candice Brown got a scholarship too, so did Lanita Sanford and Latara Darrett and look what happened to them.

  10. popularity contest Says:

Instead of people choosing players of the year by popularity they should decide using a plus and minus system based on statistics. Then you would find the true state player of the year. Assists, rebounds, steals, blocks and points would be in the plus area. Points would count for 1 pt. Assists 2pts, Steals 2pts, blocks 1pt.. Turnovers -2pts., losses to TOP teams should reduce your ovarall score for that game by -10 pts., etc…. Players of the year make their TEAM better. Although individual accolades are nice, Basketball is a team sport and how far your team goes should count for something as well. A statistal evaluation would leave no room for argument, instead we got a good campaign and a popularity vote. If your get enough articles about you in the paper and you get hyped all year long you get the vote, but true hard work and accomplishments are overlooked. The anonymous committee who made this decision blew it.

  11. common sense Says:

You are correct in your post, the paper hype was rediculous this year and actually showed by what happened that it was just hype and not factual. The problem is that the writer listens to the wrong people and doesn’t know what these people are really like behind the scenes. Maybe he learned a lesson this year but I doubt it.

  12. bad choice Says:

I get both the Times and the Register and this was definitely a bad choice for girls basketball, we have so many great freshmen right now that to choose a girl that clearly benefitted from her team and not the other way round was wrong, she hurt them with her lack of hustle and defense and definitely does not have a good attitude. I read on socal that people were calling this girl Hypeman and I would have to agree.

  13. to brea mom Says:

A real ladycat fan would not put her daughter above the team - your daughter was hyped all year and showed that she was spoiled and lazy. That reflects on you not Brea.

  14. agree Says:

To say Hypeman is like Pohlen is totally disrespectful -Pohlen was a classy young lady and student Brea bred form a classy family - this family has no class or morals - shame on you!

  15. Brea Basketball Mom Says:

You all are a bunch of idiotic illiterate people! I never said I was her mother! If any of you can read, I said our family personally knows Justine not she’s a part of our family. Just shows how intelligent you guys really are and you guys really know what you’re talking about. Please, why trash a 9th grade girl? We need to encourage kids and discourage kids. Jealousy gets you no where…..

  16. analysis Says:

First of all read what you wrote - she did it by herself - that is your problem Justines MOM - basketball is a team sport - I am from Brea and your daughter is not a team player - team players support their other teammates not trash them behind their backs, they hi five and work hard, not be lazy and give excuses when the drills are hard, they don’t pout or roll their eyes, she is nowhere near the likes of Pohlen so don’t even mention her in the same sentence. You should be grateful that Brea has some quick guards as she’d never get the ball.

  17. Why Says:

Why nothing about the other girls that made the state underclassmen teams - there were a lot of OC girls - and not a mention or do they come form the wrong side of the track, schools you don’t seem to like.
