SANTA ANA Just moments ago swim fans, rising Mater Dei sophomore Melissa Bates touched first in the 100-yard freestyle in an impressive time of 51.51 seconds in the Monarchs’ dual meet with visiting Santa Margarita. Bates easily blasted the school record and took the No. 15 spot on the county’s all-time list in the four-lap race. The county record belongs to Courtney Cashion of Irvine with a 49.26 in 2004.

Cashion is the only county girl to break 50 seconds in the 100 but it’s not much of a stretch to say that Bates will be joining Cashion - maybe this season.
