Matt Roberts resigned as Esperanza's girls basketball coach last week.
Roberts was an assistant at Esperanza for five season before taking over as the head coach the past four seasons. He led the Aztecs to an 81-34 record and two Sunset League championships.
"As a walk-on coach with a separate career, it finally just became too much," Roberts said. "I always required that my players gave 110 percent every time they stepped on the floor and I feel that with my chaotic work schedule I'm no longer in a position where I can give that same 100 percent effort on a consistent basis."
Roberts said he will help Esperanza's athletic department with the selection of the new coach. He said Esperanza hopes to have a coach hired by the summer.

Good riddens. The parent letters worked, they have been trying to get rid of him for a while. He was egotistical, a racist and vindictive.
I agree, my daughter played for him for 3 years, he was very vindictive, he let it be known that he wasn't going to let Edisons freshman take his title away. He was jealous and even made a girl quit who came from 2 different ethnic backgrounds. We're all glad he is gone.
As an Aztec fan for many years I have to speak out at Roberts dispicable behavior. He was so angry when the Freshman girl went to Edison that he went out of his way to try and get her and the team made ineligible for cif so they would be unable to win league. Winning was all too important for Matt Roberts that he would single out this girl, his words were beat her up and make sure she doesn't score - what ever it takes - I felt sick when I found out she was injured in the game against us - she was knocked to the ground many times in that game and Roberts didn't even care that we were getting killed. I also heard that he made sure she wouldn't win the MVP and had the coaches in the other sunset schools call the Edison principal to say that their team should be investigated. I'm sorry for what our coach did and I hope this girl makes a speedy recovery.
Sorry to see him leave. Very good coach. Wish him the best. Best thing that happen to EHS womens basketball. Hopefully he will change his mind about leaving.
