IRVINE — Sara Olguin scored a buzzer-beating goal on a lob shot from just beyond midtank on the final play of regulation as Sonora stunned La Habra, 11-10, to capture the Division VI title Saturday afternoon. Oh, my!
Olguin took a short pass from midtank from Brittany Reed and shot a medium height lob that was tipped slightly by La Habra goalie Stephanie Hernandez. The pool just went crazy and Sonora had its first section title in any sports since I believe 1993.
I’m kicking myself for not taking video of ‘The Shot’ but when I video I don’t see things as clear as I’d like but I have requested to get some video of the play. I do have some other video I hope folks will like. Check back tonight.
La Habra’s Kristie Romero had tied the score, 10-10, with one second left on a shot that was deflected by Sonora goalie Hena Garcia. But Sonora lined up and Olguin scored her sixth goal, her fifth of the second half.
Division II final
Dos Pueblos 9, Santa Barbara 2 — What a dud compared to Division VI, huh? As Dennis Bateman of the Santa Barbara News Press put it, the Division II final was Wednesday night between Laguna Beach and Dos Pueblos. I’ll agree with that and will say Laguna Beach needed to get the No. 2 seed but lost it to Villa Park.
More from Bateman:

Division V final
Murrieta Valley 5, Santiago/Corona 4
Second period — Sonora/La Habra
Sonora scored the first three goals of the second period to take its first lead, 4-3, on a cross-cage lob by Sara Nieves with 2:28 left in the second period. But La Habra answered with goals by Kristie Romero on extra and Dani Kenny on the perimeter off a pass by Romero to take a 5-4 lead.
Romero, a senior, has probably been the MVP of the first half with two goals, an assist and two field blocks.
Sonora has been a inconsistent attacking La Habra’s drop and is 0 for 2 on extra. Passing has been a problem for Sonora.
First period
La Habra scored the first two goals and leads 3-1 after seven minutes. Kristie Romero’s lob, Rachel Mark’s shot from 9 meters and Michelle Schrader’s push-in are the goals for the Highlanders.
Pregame
Greetings all from the wonderful, I really mean, wonderful William Woollett Jr. Aquatics Center, site of this afternoon’s CIF-SS Division VI girls water polo final between Sonora and La Habra. It’s cloudy but very comfortable. The stands are pretty well stocked — about three-quarters full.
Besides a first-ever section title for each school being up grabs, there are plenty local bragging rights on the line and a trip to next week’s Masters.
My prediction: Sonora by one.
Wow.
It’s a shame one team had to lose this game. Both teams mustered inspiring comebacks in this classic see-saw battle. La Habra’s teamwork was amazing, and they just seemed better… until the 4th quarter. Sonora ran off four straight goals and seemed poised to win easily and La Habra simply refused to give-up. When they scored the tying goal with less than 2 seconds left, it looked like they had everything going their way for the inevitable OT.
And then came “The Shot.” This will go down in Sonora lore forever. Everyone will know where they were when, “The Shot,” occurred. We were right behind the Garcias. Sara’s toss seemed to hang in the air forever, and La Habra’s goalie didn’t seem to be able to move…as though she were in quicksand. The ball sailed toward the far right corner, glanced off the goalkeeper’s outstretched fingertips and settled into the net. GOOOOOOAAAAALLLLLLLLLLLLLLL!!!
Shock, disbelief and bedlam ensued. We went from certain overtime and uncertain outcome to instant victory as Sara scored with no time remaining. Those of us who were there still can’t believe it. Hey Dan, if that’s not your OC player of the year, I don’t know who is.
Big congratulations to La Habra for a fantastic break-out season. They are a force. But it was Sonora’s year, lead by Senior Sara Olguin, who knows not to quit until the final horn sounds. Nice job, Sonora, you deserved it!!
