We’re not in the O.C. anymore
In fact, I’m not even sure where I am.
We are live from either North Hollywood or Studio City. I am sure that the Girls Volleyball Division III Regional Final will feature Harvard-Westlake of North Hollywood by way of Studio City against your very own Laguna Beach Breakers.
The winner will advance to the state finals Saturday in San Jose.
I’ve got you covered.
We have confirmation …
We are in North Hollywood. Props to the Harvard-Westlake security/janitor/all-around great guy for helping me out.
Both teams are on the court. Harvard-Westlake is going through some ball control drills. Laguna just got finished stretching. The fans are pouring in. I hear that Harvard will have a pretty boisterous student section. I’m looking forward to it.
5:55 p.m.
Moment of truth is approaching
Both teams are on the court and I’m sitting on the floor in the corner. No, I’m not being punished, but my battery was running low, so I have to plug in my laptop. I should get double pay for this.
But we have Run DMC pumping through the speakers, so all is not lost. One of the Laguna fans asked me who I thought the “overachieving” team of the year was. I hadn’t given this much thought, but look for a web-only column in the future on the subject.
6:38 p.m.
Let’s start the show
Both teams have gone through pregame warm-ups. Laguna is getting last-minute instructions from coach Lance Stewart. Introductions are next.
6:58 p.m.
Laguna just lost its first game in about 5 years
Or so it seems.
The Breakers were thoroughly outplayed in game one. Harvard-Westlake won 25-15. The Wolverines student section just serenaded the Breakers with the overrated chant, but doesnt that take away from the accomplishments of the Wolverines. Think about that kids.
Haven’t I seen this score before
Harvard-Westlake takes the second game 25-15, the identical score of the first game. Laguna coach Lance Stewart has just called his troops over for a talk before what could be the end of their season. I’m not sure any talk will be able to help, Laguna is going to need a minor miracle to come back in this one.
What will the third game bring? Will we see a fourth game?
No.
Harvard-Westlake held off a spirted Laguna effort in the third game but eventually put the finishing touches on the match, winning game 3, 25-23.
The drive here was longer than the match.
Final scores: Harvard-Westlake, 25-15, 25-15, 25-23.
With that, the girls volleyball season (for me anyway) is officially over.
