Beckman Football TeammBY SEAN DIAZ (BECKMAN ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL)

I would like to thank Artie Casas, Josh Diggs and the Tustin News for giving me the opportunity to be the first guest “blogger.”

There are several interesting connections between Artesia and Beckman. One interesting connection is that Adele Heuer, Beckman’s principal, was once an assistant principal at Artesia. Additionally, Brian Mustain, Nick Beronich, and yours truly all came to Beckman from Bellflower. Guess who plays in Bellflower’s league? You got it – Artesia. While at Bellflower, Coach Mustain went 3-0 against the Pioneers.

What to look for: I would look for this to be a very emotional game for both teams, but especially for Beckman. The emotion of a season opener will also add to the intensity of this contest.

Another element to be aware of is Beckman’s new offensive scheme. Look to see D’Amato Tyson carry a bulk of the load from the one back set, but the ball will be in the air a bit more this season.

Who to watch: If I were to pick one player to watch on each side of the ball, the player to watch on offense would be Tyson. This offense really suits his running style.

On defense I would select safety Matt Cortez. Cortez is one of the finest tacklers I have seen in a while. He is always around the ball and finishes well. What he lacks in size, he makes up with a great attitude and desire.

Must step up: Rick Fenton and the rest of the offensive line. This is always an area of concern for any coach. How will this group come together? Football coaches everywhere always hope that this group steps up and it is no different at Beckman.

Key to game: The two biggest factors (keys) in any game are turnovers (+/-) and field position. The Patriots must succeed in these key areas to ultimately win.

PREDICTION: I think that the Patriots will start the season 1-0 with a 35-14 victory. Beckman has dedicated this game and the entire season to their fellow Patriot, Kenny Wilson. All the Patriots will be smiling tomorrow night, no matter where they are.
