OC H.S. Sports

what about adam hewko or shea buckner?
Both Adam Hewko and Shea Buckner were overrated. Adam was a stellar water polo player in age group water polo, but he was not exceptionally great in high school. Although he may have been good, he did not dominate the game against division 1 teams. Likewise for Shea Buckner, great player but no one of the best. It is very simple, the level of play in division two water polo caters to “good” players who can easily put up 100+ goals in a season against sub par teams. Realistically, the level of play these days is signifigantly worse than Arroyo’s time. Match a good defender against Hewko or Buckner and there playmaking ability is signifigantly curtailed.
john mann? he was a workhorse with CDM.
Acevado, although not a county player, hate to break it to you but while OC is the hot bed, some of the best all timers have come from elsewhere. Acevado has changed the way the game is played at each level he has competed at. JW is a nice player, but step back and see the entire landscape.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to Clinton and his family. I can only imagine if it were my son.
We ordered a mouth guard next day.
Water Polo Mom
what about adam hewko and shea buckner? hewko had stellar seasons his junior and senior years and buckner was a monster last year.
Bruce Ingalls has done an amazing job taking a team that had lost 15 straight and keeping them focused and ready to play. For a team that was picked to finish last in the Sea View League, and hadn’t won a league game in the two previous seasons to be in a position to win a league title is nothing short of amazing. In addition the return of offensive coordinator John Lester has sparked the Hawks. Bruce has also spent the remainder of his time organizing the building and furnishing of the 4500sq ft weight room, football offices, and new stadium. Bruce has the program headed in the right direction and poised to do well for some time.

You might add Mike Marrujo to that list. Without many of the resources of other schools he consistently turns out well coached and courageous winning teams. His game plan, and his team’s gutsy play against OLU this Friday sum up what a talented coach he is. One of the class acts in OC football.
Well, Esperanza absolutely destroyed Los Al on Thurs, and Valencia knocked Orange Lutheran off of their pedastal. I say this is how it should be.
1. Mission Viejo
2. Edison
3. Esperanza
4. Orange Lutheran
5. Los Al
6. Mater Dei
7. Santa Margarita
8. San Clemente
9. Valencia
10. Tesoro
Why isn’t Valencia in the top 10???
Guys… There can be no wild card out of the Sea View League. The new CIF rules have awarded an automatic berth to those leagues with seven or more teams. Consequently, with five teams in Division VI, the Suburban League will send the only wild card team in the Division into the playoffs. Keep up the great reporting… Steve
Yes, add Marrujo to the list. He’s a pro’s pro. He also has sent a few guys to pros, going back to his days at Puix. He’s old-school. Calm but intense. I think he puts players in positions to be successful and lets them decide the game. He’s definitely someone I would think players would like to play for. No ego, either.
Ok, I was touched by this blog. Sincerely, it hurts me to see what is happening here. As a parent of a teenager who plays football, I know it’s tough to keep them on a clean path…as every parent of a teen can attest. I want these Tesoro boys to succeed in their sports career! Yet, I’ve always told my son that a team is only as good as it’s players… not just in terms of athletic ability, but in terms of moral and ethical fortitude. Therefore, what an athlete does off the field is just as important as what they do on the field. We all make mistakes. That’s how we learn. We’re human. Most certainly we need to forgive and forget. But’ life is about choices… whether good or ill. And, all of us have to live with the consequencs of our choices… good or ill. What is at stake here is a bigger lesson than just whether or not athletes are allowed to play if they screw up. Young men (and women), like these boys, need to learn respect and concern for others…that life is not just one big free for all…. That each choice we make in life effects the self and others…. for good or ill….. It’s real simple folks: Do unto others as you would have done unto yourself.
The controversy at Tesoro is a debacle which creates questions on so many levels. In any democratic society, every person or group is granted and entitled to certain rights as guaranteed by our laws and constitution.
There is no question that Scott McKnight & Sam Smith are self-admittedly guilty of writing threatening and inappropriate passages about their teacher and classmates. Their writings were a colossal mistake of judgment and the boys should and must receive punishment of some form. But what punishment fits the crime and, as students, what are their rights?
Teachers provide a valuable service to our children and have the right to work in a safe and secure environment. The teachers union yields a mighty sword when representing the rights of its members and demanding their safety. The union is demanding the McKnight & Smith be expelled for the remainder of their senior year. This includes restraining orders, being banned from campus, barred from all high school events including prom, grad night and graduation. This begs the question, where should the line be drawn in the union’s power to represent and protect its teachers vs. prescribe or demand specific levels of punishment for students?
Tesoro High School immediately suspended the students pending further investigation. A special investigative police unit was assigned to evaluate McKnight & Smith and the level of the threat of their writings. Their homes were searched and they were questioned at length. Their conclusion was that McKnight & Smith posed no threat to anyone and no charges would be filed. A doctor of psychology examined McKnight and Smith at length determined that they posed no threat to anyone. Their records for the past 12 years indicated that they were model students academically and neither had any previous disciplinary issues of any kind.
CUSD is now recommending expulsion for the remainder of the year. The expulsion hearing isn’t scheduled until November 28th. Why? Does this ruling take away a students right to an education? Does this punishment fit the crime? Even our criminal justice system has a “3 strikes” law allowing for repeat offenders to be treated with leniency; why not the school system?
This punishment only makes sense when the “zero tolerance policy” is factored into the situation. “Zero tolerance” simply states that no child can ever make any mistake of any kind, ever. All students and parents are required at registration to sign a “zero tolerance policy” agreement. In theory and spirit, the zero tolerance policy is good. In practice, zero tolerance eliminates the option for a “measured response” or “grey area” in any infraction and gives CUSD the right to administer any level of punishment they choose. In essence, it completely takes away the rights of the students and their parents. A student must hire an attorney to have rights under the current system or they will have no rights at all.
The questions remains, what is the punishment that fits the crime? Where does the power and influence of the teachers union begin and end? Does CUSD have the right to impose a punishment with consequences which will reach far beyond the four walls and four years of high school? These are questions which now, only the courts can answer because an attorney had to be hired to fight for the rights of the students. I for one hope they (the courts) bring clear, thoughtful and balanced opinions and rulings to this extremely unfortunate series of events.
Bobby Mendoza at Fairmont Prep. Mendoza, in his first year, turns a 0-4 start into the schools first CIF playoff apperance with a team of mostly sophomores adn juniors.
Don’t forget the small schools.
How about Guy Gardner at Pacifica…since taking over for Bill Craven (one of the legends), he won the League championship last year, and with a win against Santiago will clinch another title…not bad in 2 years as Head Coach….especially since he does not have the numbers to work with as other larger schools.
How many of those teams in the top ten could beat St. John Bosco, Loyola and Bishop Amat on consecutive weekends. Servite’s young group of men are maturing at the right time under their new head coach, Troy Thomas, and I would expect to see them in the top ten this week. They are an exciting group of men who have demonstrated great character in their wins over the last three weeks. Their gains in maturity and poise is reminiscent of Servite’s young 1981 team which went on to upset then nationally top-ranked Edison in the first round of the playoffs, in route to the Division I title the following year.
I’m a Laguna Hills football dad, so I’m a BIT biased, but Coach Ingalls & staff have done a magnificent job with the Hawk team. The teams who beat the Hawks in the first four games all knew they dodged a bullet. The team is physically undersized (only one +220 lb. starter) but the players have the hearts of lions. The LHHS / Newport Harbor game for the league championship is THE game of the week. GO HAWKS!
Mitch Olson….enough said.
How is it that Orange Lutheran beat Kennedy but lost to Valencia, Does that mean Kennedy is better then what they seem to be, if they beat Valencia, and didn’t play all to there ability against O.L.?
Kennedy, Why do u think there where they are? I think they have a great team that could go to the division six finals
From 0 league victories in ’04 to Co-champion of the toughest league in So Cal. Done deal – Troy Thomas @ Servite!
I cant believe some of these comments. Its a football game. Life will go on and in 10 years no one will even care. It sounds like most of you are more concerned over the game than the moral issue’s that these two now face.
I have a 16 year old son that plays football for Trabuco Hills and have followed this story with interest as my wife and I actively try to monitor our sons school work and social life, as much as can be done with a high school student. The fact is nobody can 100% be sure what the kid is thinking, and or doing most of the time. My understanding was this was suppossed to be a private journal and these kids were just attempting comedy no different then SouthPark on the Comedy Channel, I’m afraid that the school board needs to watch the show a little more as often times the kids (4th graders on the show)are often the ones teaching the adults, not to over-react to events in real life. A joke is just that a joke, don’t blow-it up, take it out of context, or make it something other then what it was intended. If they never meant any one other then themselves to review it, and prior to this overblown situation didn’t appear to have any mental issue’s with society. Now it’s hard to believe, that after this they will have any sense of humor,or will ever again feel free to state their opinion without fear of retrobution. Sad days for all of us. Mad Magazine,& National Lampoon, were my favorites growing up they would have had a field day with this whole story.
Dont forget about the small schools, Coach Lock of St. Maragret’s has gone undefeated for the first time, knocking Sage and Bretheren out of the picture getting first place in the league for the first time in many years. Coach Lock is going to take St. Maragret’s all the way this year for Division 13, its also his last year coaching
Troy Thomas of Servite took over a team that won zero league games last year 2-8 (0-5), and has catapulted them to Serra League co-champs with a 7-3 (4-1) record. Before this season Servite had only won 3 out of 15 league games in the past 3 years. Thomas was able to turn the team around in one season, while competing in the toughest league in Southern California. He deserves coach of the year honors.
Troy Thomas – Sevite
Servite was 2-8 last year and picked to finish last in league this year.
Coach Thomas has guided this team to a 7-3 record and their first Serra League title in his first year. They won their last four beating St. John Bosco, Loyola, Bishop Amat; which just embarassed Mater Dei this past Friday, and finally Santa Margarita.
Last week Santa Margarita was ranked in the top 10 and Servite wasn’t although Servite had a better league record and were 1-1 against similar opponents compared to Santa Margarita, who was 0-2. That didn’t make sense…..
It will be interesting to see this coming week’s rankings after Mater Dei was blown out by Bishop Amat 28-7. Servite blew out Bishop Amat the previous weekend 37-5.
Yes, Mater Dei beat Servite the first week of the regular season, but it’s recent history which is the better indicator of the Serra League’s new reality. Right now, Servite is the best team in the Serra League. It takes time to learn and be efficient at new offensive and defensive schemes, and this young team which is dominated by underclassmen is peaking at the right time………. under the leadership of ……….
Coach Troy Thomas, Coach of the year!!!!!!
Troy Thomas at Servite has to be a strong favorite
considering he took a team that was 2-8 (0-5) and turned the program completely around. This year Servite is 7-3 (4-1) with a share of the Serra League title, arguably the toughest league in California.
San Clemente almost beat mission!!! 7-6 That either means San Clemente is in the top 5 or Mission shouldn’t be.
This is the first I have heard of this event, but from someone who comes from a nearby zero-tolerance school district, I have to side with the district. Rules are set, and they must be followed – if you don’t like them, then change them, but you can’t fold because he is/was a nice guy.
Imagine if the teacher had written words like that? Would you think anyone would allow that teacher to stay in the district much less the profession? Too bad for the kids, but being under 18 they have just received the greatest gift in the world – a lesson that doesn’t carry forward. I am sure they can transfer to another school, and with 6 months to go, I am sure they will go to that prom just fine. They will have learned there are real consequences in this world, yet when they turn 18, their slate is clean and not at their college or the rest of their life, will anyone know or care about this issue.
I am not a great believer in the zero-tolerance rule, but if its there, then follow it!! else all the kids will learn that there are no consequences in this world!!
As a VHS alum and a one-time player for Coach Marrujo, I don’t have a frame of reference with which to judge other coaches and I am a partisan. That said, I do believe one must consider Coach Marrujo for top honors most every year, and this year in particular. The strength of the collective character of this year’s team is a testament to Coach and his entire staff. I know first hand that he teaches a diverse group of kids a single, simple set of principles that apply not just to success in football but in life: be on time, do your job to the best of your ability, put the team first, do not grandstand. I for one hold him in the highest regard.
All three of these great kickers were trained and are still training with West Coast Kicking Academy and Brad Bohn. All three graduate this year and will kick in college.
For more info on O.C. kickers and who will be kicking at OC high schools next year go http://www.westcoastkicking.com
Note: We have seven freshmen that should start for their high schools next year. The best kickers in the country will be coming out of OC. That is Brad’s five-year plan. In the first two years West Coast Kicking’s students have delivered 12 school distance records; two all-county kickers; two south all-star kickers; five all-CIF kickers, and a dozen game-winning kicks. Also a Pop Warner kicker that led his team to Orlando’s Super Bowl two consecutive years.
How about this: Connor Loftus, 12 year old kicker/QB/LB playing with 14-15 year olds on his Pop Warner team, Yorba Linda Aztecs, won the Midget Division 1 final with field goals of 37, 39, and 39 yards to win 9-8. All three would have been good from 45-52 yards and were “nails.” What a future! His brother Mike is even better at this point and is a freshman at Servite.
Nice to see Servite got the respect it deserved in the final standings. I hope Troy Thomas does as well, as I think it is obvious that he is the coach of the year.
I still struggle with Mater Dei being in the Top 10 when they have lost 4 times this year.
I heard about that. That is crazy. My prayers go out for him and his family. I want to know how crazy that game was. Jeez!!! That is intense. How did it happen? Puch or what? Pretty intesnse! i thought our games were intesnse.
You forgot a Charger. Edison’s defense is anchored by 3-year linebacker Davey Baldwin. He averaged over 13 tackles from the middle spot last year, until being moved to the outside this year where his numbers are down a bit, but he still leads the team in tackles by a big gap and is a major reason the Chargers give up less than 10 points a game.
Kennedy will get to the finals u can bet that on it, any takers?
you all forgot about ben terry from capo valley. this guy can hit. And flys side to side at outside linebacker. also probably has some of the hardest hits i’ve seen this season.
ok i seriously don’t understand why mater dei is still in the top ten even though they got killed 4 times
What about Eric Archer, CB for Kennedy. He has effectively shut down one side of the field all year. Orange Lutheran was the only team to try him and you saw what happened there. He hasn’t had the opportunity for interceptinos only because they won’t throw it his way.
This situation has been very interesting to me as both a teacher and a parent. As a teacher, I have been the target of a death threat and it disturbed me horribly. It was sent as an email and because of that nothing was able to be done to the students.
The bottom line is that these boys at Tesoro broke school rules. They threatened a teacher’s life. In post-Columbine you simply cannot do that, too many lives are potentially at stake. That said, the boys have been punished. They have suffered the consequences. I do not understand why they simply cannot be transferred to another school in the district.
Their actions have hurt another person. A person who trusted and worked for their benefit. Her career, personal well-being and safety has been compromised. She should not have to see these boys or have them in her work environment.
I understand that the police have declined to prosecute. These young men do not have a history of violence, nor have they stored up a cache of weapons, but every person deserves to work in a place where they feel safe.
How can you overlook Michael Ciaccio (5 Its,4 fumb.rec.and 89 tackles) or Andy Nikolenko(64 tackles, 10.5 sacks), or Mark Bentrott( 112 tackles) with Northwood H.S. In the playoffs, they held both Northviews running backs (2ea 1000+ seasons) in check and gave up the fewest points of any team in O.C. And will see Tesoro again in just a few weeks again…
No one even throws in Sean Calcagnie’s direction. Besides being a great running back, he is one of the premier safety’s in the OC in my opinion.
Interesting that Dave White, long time Edison Charger Coach gets no mention! His team has won 10 in a row, no one has even come close to beating the Chargers in that streak and the defense and the offense are tops in the Div I Sunset league. His offense is the only one in the Sunset league that throws the ball consistently while everyone else just pounds you with the run. Certainly the coach for the number rated Div I schoool in OC deserves a nod don’t you think?
You have to give it up to Ted McMillen @ Westminister. A 17-1 League record in the last three years is on of the best. He has taken the Lions program to another level with a lot of hard work. If the Lions go deep in the playoff Ted deserves this honor!!!!!!
Mike Marrujo is hands down the best coach in the county. You put him at another school that has more talent and bigger players and he would win CIF every year. The things he does with the players he has are incredible. He creates a team atmosphere and game plans better than any other high school coach. The film work he does and reports he gives his players for the opposition are amazing. He should be coaching a college team somewhere.
Here another you can throw in there. I saw him when he was a soph and he impress the heck out of me. I also believe he is the only true division one kid that have a shot coming out of CDM. You guessesd right. I think Shawn Mohler is one of the best defensive player I have had the pleasure to watch.
Troy’s Brian Charle. He had four sacks in the Warriors’ first round win over Valley and two more sacks in a win against Sonora- he also had to fumble recoveries against the Raiders. Charle, a senior, also returned a fumble and interception for touchdowns in a win against Fullerton.
Charle has been a great player for an underrated Troy defense- which was spotty, but better then people think.
Charle, who played OLB at 6’0, 200, will probably be good safety in college and would probably be at a D-I school if the Register gave small schools some press.
The Friars have come back from a team that was ranked one of the worst in the league to come back and claim a record of 7-3. It truly is amazing to have a team like this dominated by underclassmen going so far in the playoffs and taking a Co-Serra League Championship.
What bout Edward Pleasant…if you havent seen him play you need to go out and watch this kid…next friday against valencia…number 5…semi-finals of the CIF playoffs.
I think this is glory year for Kennedy and won’t see much of them anymore. I’d be on the look out for Servite. Most of the team is composed of young players with only a couple seniors. Watch them be in the top ten. Watch Valencia beat Kennedy.
Galippo @ Servite is the best linebacker in So CA
and Flanagan also @ Servite is the best shutdown corner in OC
Anyone who was at the Servite/Poly game last week would know that Troy Thomas deserves a strong look as coach of the year. The changes he made during halftime made a tremendous difference in the outcome of the game. Ask any alum who regularly attends games and they’ll tell you it was about time we had leadership to go with the young talent.
For the gentleman who said “a joke’s a joke,” I challenge him to reflect on how he’d feel if the target of the following material, allegedly from Sam Smith’s journal, was his own wife, daughter, or mother.
Troy Thomas of Servite. Enough said.
The best defensive player I’ve seen for the last couple of years is JONATHAN GLOVER @ Villa Park. He’s normally an outside linebacker(6’4,215) but was moved to the inside this year. This kid has a non-stop motor. He averaged about 15 tackles a game this year and that was playing on a bum knee most of the year. Ask any Century League coach who they look out for on the opposing defense, they would say #44…
I am so sick of these coaches defending the boys! I do understand that they are kids and kids make mistakes and do stupid things, however being a mother of a teenage daughter, if my child came home and said that there were 2 boys that did the things these boys did I would fight to have them kicked out of the school! Here is some food for thought on the football issue, Why is it, that if you don’t have the grades you can’t play sports, but if you threaten a teacher and other students you should be able to do what you want (play football) I think that these coaches need to get a grip and focus on the entire picture! Just because they play football doesn’t mean they should get away with inappropriate actions!!!
Check out Cody Williams of Orange. Awesome!
As a Tesoro parent, we are so proud of our Titans. As far as I am concerned, the two Titans who got suspended need to suffer the consequences of their actions. And the Titans who were in the field last night played a great game.
I was stunned to see that there was no word about Rianna, our wonderful song leader who died two days prior to last night’s game. The boys were there playing a hard game and the cheerleaders were there to cheer them on. I think even though I am so glad they won, I am so gald that these youngsters were there to celebrate a human story in spite of a thoughtless reporter who did not mention anything about the tragedy that occurred two days prior.
i think nick frazier from newport harbor is really good and he is only a junior. he only played a quarter in the fountain valley game but he is still the leading tackler and is second in the sea view league in tackles. He is the best middle linebacker in all southern california. And he also plays fullback and does almost all the kicking
I would have to agree with the person above me. How could you post something as an adult or even a parent saying something so ridiculous as “a joke is a joke”. You seriously neeed to re-evaluate yourself. Last time i checked, you had not read what those boys wrote, and like the guy said above me, how would you feel if the target of the material, allegedly from Sam Smith and Scotty McKnight’s journals, was his own wife, daughter, or mother. And if you were wondering, I know those guys. I played with them for two years. Yes they are two great players but what they wrote was ridiculous. I also was a student of the English teacher that they had. We did the exact same thing that they did this year, keep a journal about our week and stuff and she said she wouldn’t read it. But do you think in your right mind I would write about killing her? No, I didnt think so. Next time, I would get you facts straight before talking like you know something about this situation.
Mater Dei is in the top 10 because they deserve it with its strength of schedule and consistent games despite the fact its has a freshman QB. Hey, they beat Loyola, the eventual D-1 champs.
Legendary Los Al coach John Barnes shakes the So Cal football world and accepts the head job at Servite. Barnes then shows up at the Anaheim campus to meet his players, takes one look at the size of the personnel on the team, drives back to Los Al and has an immediate “change of heart”??
Enter Troy Thomas from Crespi. He looks at the same young men, and sees a winning program. He then takes the team from zero league victories in ’04 to an ’05 Serra League (So Cal’s toughest league)championship. Along the way his team defeats Loyola (the eventual Div 1 champion) , Long Beach Poly, Bishop Amat, Santa Margarita, and St. John Bosco to name a few. Did I mention they did all of this with a core of Sophmores and Juniors? . . . and, Seniors that never experienced a Serra League victory!
Mix in a home game schedule that included only 1 Orange County venue; a tragic off season accident that took the life of one of his players & injured another, another accident that took the lives of 2 former players, and the loss of a beloved Assistant Athletic director.
With all due respect to the many great high school football programs, Servite’s 2005 season is your “Story of the Year”.
Servite sounds like a story, but Loyola’s playoff run was spectatular. First, a win over Lakewood to avenge a playoff loss last year. Second, a win over highly favored Edison that included 6 lead changes. Third, a shut-out over Mater Dei, avenging an overtime loss during the season. And last, an epic win over Esperanza that included 5 lead changes. I was at the game, and I can say without a doubt it was the most exciting game I have ever seen live. Running against passing, high scoring, and major momemtum shifts. Loyola was toast in the 4th quarter, and pulled off 2 touchdowns in the last 2 minutes. Quarterback Henry Burge may never play big time college football but he is a winner. I feel for Esperanza because they caught a team of destiny on a roll.
I don’t know. I like the Servite story better. Like you said, Loyola was “destined” to win while no one picked Servite. Even Coach Barnes abondoned the program. I was even looking at the picks for the week Servite was to play Poly, and nobody picked Servite to win. And since this is the OC Register, let’s keep it within Orange County. Los Angeles doesn’t give OC a lot of credit anyway, so let’s at least try to keep it within the county.
Has anyone checked out http://www.starprospect.com? It is a pretty cool recruiting site. You can join for free.
Agree with Tim. Barne’s “change of heart” and Thomas’ white knight-like move is the story of the year.
I think Newport Harbor this year was the top story. After last year’s loss to Orange Lutheran in the finals, and after almost all of the starters left everyone counted them out. At the begining of the season nobody thought they could win the championship let alone win their league or make it to the playoffs. But still they overcame enormous adversity and came back to stun everyone and win the championship. After the return of RB Ryan Rippon in Week 5, Harbor almost knocked off Mira Costa, but lost in overtime by a field goal. After another tough loss to Aliso Niguel by a 52-yard field goal with one second left, the team came together. Everyone made plays from Nick Frazier, (junior)the middle linebacker leading the team in tackles, to Rippon having 1,237 yards in the last six games. All this along with many other outstanding performances culminated in Harbor winning.
Trabuco Hills, in boys basketball. The Mustangs were figured to be better, sure, but a 2-0 start in the South Coast League is more than I expected. Yep, McCluskey is a pretty good coach, huh?
Corona del Mar’s girls water polo team. Yes, the Sea Queens are No. 1 in OC but I didn’t expect them to be this good, with 2 wins over Foothill. CdM lost, remember, All-County players Brittany Fullen(GK) and Jordan Anae and the under-rated Katlin Kubas.
Sonora and Dana Hills also have much better records than I thought they would at this pt.
To the person who think that Shea Buckner is overrated. You obviously don’t know anything. Shea Buckner is a stud. His Father was an all american in college. His brother and sister played at USC. He was the youngest player on the US Senior National Team last year. He played on all the Junior National Teams. You think this guy makes these team because he’s overrated. Who are you kidding? Talk to the other players and ask them what they think of Shea Buckner. Great shooter and defender. He is a multifaceted player who will definitely be in Bejing.
